Transnistria is a self-proclaimed state that is not recognized internationally and is legally considered as a part of Moldova. The entity was established in 1990 as Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992, a Russia-backed war with Moldova broke out and ended with a ceasefire that has left the territory to self-govern. Due to the presence of a significant number of Russian troops, Transnistria is considered to be under military occupation by Russia.

Since then, it has formed its own government and created its own currency. The population is around 500 000 people, and 90% of them are citizens of Transnistria. The residents of Transnistria may hold dual, triple, or even quadruple citizenship of internationally recognized countries, mainly Moldova and Russia. However, only the Russian elections are openly publicized in the region, even though it is not a part of Russia.
