Futaba is a small town located in the Fukushima Prefecture of Japan. Unfortunately, it was one of the towns that suffered the most during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in March 2011. As a result of the disaster, the entire population of Futaba was evacuated, leaving the town empty and uninhabited.
While the official registered population of Futaba was 6093 before the disaster, during the time of my visit the actual population was zero. However, over the past decade, progress has been made in the town's recovery efforts. Today, 3% of the town has been opened for visitors and residents to return, and since February 2022, the first residents have started returning on a permanent basis.
