The Datooga are a pastoralist tribe known for their skilled blacksmithing and distinctive appearance. Historically rivals of the Maasai, they were gradually pushed south, and the Maasai word for Datooga even translates to “enemy.” Yet the Datooga share a cooperative bond with the neighboring Hadzabe, crafting iron arrowheads for their hunts. Facial scarification and tatooing, sometimes seen among Datooga women, remains a striking symbol of identity and cultural heritage.
